The Hamburgische Staatsoper is one of the leading opera houses in Europe. Outstanding opera performances and enchanting ballets are on the varied program, which spans almost 400 years of music history.
Since art-loving citizens founded Germany’s first public opera house at Gänsemarkt in 1678, the Hamburgische Staatsoper has had a decisive influence on Hamburg’s cultural life: Operas by Georg Friedrich Händel premiered here, Gustav Mahler directed the house for several years and world careers of great stars such as Placido Domingo began at the Staatsoper. Even today, the audience can experience great artistic personalities and a brilliantly disposed ensembles in Hamburg’s Opera House.
Under the new directorship of Georges Delnon and Kent Nagano, the Hamburg State Opera’s repertoire includes a wide variety of productions ranging from baroque opera to world premieres of works by contemporary composers, classics of the opera and ballet repertoire, as well as performances of modern music theater.
Under the direction of Ballet Director John Neumeier, the Hamburg Ballet has enjoyed world fame for more than four decades. In addition to two premieres each season, the ballet program also includes a series of new productions and revivals of John Neumeier’s now legendary choreographies.
