Registration office

The knowledge of the German language is required for the online registration. The German language is helpful when registering with the authorities since many officials do not speak English or only insufficiently to clarify complicated matters.

In order to register in Hamburg, an appointment at one of the registration offices is required. You can make an appointment for the registration online:

The following documents must be submitted during the first registration in Hamburg:

  • Registration form (Download section)
  • Original and valid ID or passport (no copy)
  • Landlord’s confirmation of residence (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung/Template download section)
Married couple
  • Original marriage certificate (international or translated into German)
  • Both persons have to visit the office for the first registration in Germany
Children
  • Original birth certificates of the children
  •  The children have to join their parents during the registration process

Later, after moving within Hamburg to a new apartment again, an other person (family, friend, colleague) can re-register the family or a single person at the registration office in Hamburg.

The following documents must be submitted during the re-registration in Hamburg:

  • Registration form (Download section)
  • Original and valid ID or passport (no copy)
  • Landlord’s confirmation of residence (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung/Template download section)
  • Power of attorney from the person (husband, wife) which will not be present (Template power of attorney download section)
